about

This song is about the mice of the genus mus. These are house mice and they are the genus we use in research. The Animal Welfare Act of 1966 (which preceded legislation ensuring ethical treatment of humans by eight years) specifically excludes mus from the definition of animal meaning that research on them is mostly unaccountable. This definitional sleight of hand means that we don’t know how many research mice live in the United States. Best estimates are about 100 million. We know exactly, to the individual, how many dogs, cats and deer mice (genus: peromyscus) are used in research. In fact, 70 percent of male mice bred for research are never even used. They are surplus mice, killed because of inefficiencies. They live and die entirely unnoticed. Furthermore, mice do not make a particularly good research model for human diseases and may actually impair our scientific understanding. Even good studies sound strange. To study depression scientists swim mice until exhaustion. A mouse that gives up more easily is seen as more prone to depression and is then used in trials on depression drugs. Mice make an interesting analogy to human homelessness which is also often unnoticed both definitionally and practically and this song is also about the very short homeless advocate Lorenza Andrade Smith. Called to live among the homeless she worked with her Bishop to find a suitable charge for this work and he suggested that she be charged to do “nothing” for three years. She doesn’t accept money or sleep in houses, but hopefully she will change the world.

lyrics

Nothing will change the world a song about mice

Nothing will change the world, Nothing will change the world

In a hole
In a corner
of the bishop’s
antique credenza

Lives a mouse
a tiny mouse
with the name
Lorenza

And she thinks
about the world
and her friends
the ones she’s never seen

And she worries
about their safety
about their homes
the ones they’ve never had

she knows that
Nothing will change the world

We think we know how you are feeling
We think we know how it makes us feel
We think our feelings are important
We think you need to learn how we feel
