about

Made internet famous in the last couple of years by a series of photographs in which they appear almost impossibly happy, the quokka is a small cat sized marsupial that lives in the south west corner of Australia and the adjacent Rottnest Island. The island, which means “Rat’s nest” in English, was so named because an early explorer saw quokkas and assumed they must be large rats. They are unusual in their ability to survive in environments almost totally devoid of fresh water. They have no fear of humans. Like humans they also suffer from muscular dystrophy and are therefore much studied. They recover when given vitamin E. Zoobiquity is a new field of study which seeks to explore what animals and humans have in common in order to advance medical treatment for all species. For the last two hundred years we have actively worked to distance human and animal medicine so that now physicians and veterinarians rarely consult with one another. However, and this is the lesson of the quokka, we have much to learn by applying treatments developed for one species to the possible cure of the other.

lyrics

quokka a song about quokkas

When you first saw me, should have recognized me
I’m really not that hard to see
Just because I don’t fit your categories
Doesn’t mean I’m not the one you need

I, I am the quokka
I am the herald of zoobiquity
Together we will find healing
We will together be happy

While you need food and water every day
I don’t really find it hard to be
Able to survive even in a harsh climate
All I need is some more vitamin E

I, I am the quokka
I am the herald of zoobiquity
Together we will find healing
We will together be happy
Together we will be happy
Together we will be wholex
